CHARLESTON, WV – West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin announced that 14 people are confirmed dead in devastating flooding across the state.

Tomblin made the announcement Friday during a news conference. He says the damage is widespread and devastating. The governor says search and rescue missions are still a top priority.

“Please continue to work together and support each other as West Virginians always do,” Tomblin pleaded at a news conference.

The most significant flooding has occurred in and around the state’s capital, Charleston, where at least three of the deaths have been reported.

9 inches of rain fell on parts of West Virginia leaving thousands without power. 500 people were trapped in a shopping center when a bridge washed out. Dozens of others had to be plucked off rooftops or rescued as waters quickly rose.

State officials said the flooding is likely going to be the worst West Virginia has seen in 100 years.
