MONTREAL – The Quartier des Spectacles (Montreal Entertainment District) proudly introduces Articulated Intersect-Relational Architecture 18, created by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer for La Triennale québécoise 2011. Lozano-Hemmer’s kinetic sculptures have been shown in international events and museums around the world but it is a première for Montreal to welcome its home base artist, born in Mexico City. This is the first time that the artist, known worldwide for this type of intervention, has produced such a large-scale public work in the city.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is introducing an interactive system that the public can activate physically within the space, in real time. Through the public’s participation, the projectors set up in the square, equipped with powerful light beams that can be seen over a radius of fifteen kilometres, interact and produce sculptures in the Montreal sky.

The apparatus consists of eighteen 10,000-watts projectors, which visitors will be able to indirectly position to create sculptures in the downtown sky. Six electromechanical levers, each connected to three projectors, can be manipulated by six participants.

The public can view and interact with it from October 7 to November 6, 2011: Sunday to Wednesday from 6:30 to 11 p.m, and Thursday to Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to midnight. It’s a participatory installation that’s worth a detour!

The work Articulated Intersect-Relational Architecture 18 is presented by the Musée d’art contemporain (MAC), in collaboration with the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership.
