VIETNAM – The owners of a Boeing 727 apparently abandoned at Viet Nam’s Noi Bai International Airport since May last year have reportedly undertaken to take the plane back and pay overdue fees.

News of the plane’s apparent abandonment and a “search” for its owners spread worldwide this week – after all, it’s not every day that news agencies can write headlines like “Oops where did I leave my 727?”

But the truth is often less amusing than the speculation…

The plane, owned by Royal Khmer Airlines and painted in Air Dream colours, was parked on the tarmac due to a technical problem. Vo Huy Cuong, head of the Viet Nam Civil Aviation Administration’s Air Transportation Department, said airline officials had promised Vietnamese authorities they will fix the problem and pay the parking fees.

The plane was parked at the airport only a month after Royal Khmer Airlines received its license to operate flights between the Cambodian city of Siem Riep and Hanoi, and had flown only several flights.

According to Vietnam Business Finance, Cambodian aviation authorities removed the 30-year-old plane from its registration in August.

It is understood the necessary mechanical work has yet to be carried out.
